I absolutely LOVE solving codeword puzzles. I work on one every night before bed—and the funny thing is, it relaxes me! You’d think it would make your brain go into overdrive, but it actually helps me wind down.
So what’s the twist with codeword puzzles? They look like regular crosswords, but instead of clues, each square has a number. You have to figure out which number stands for which letter. For example, if “18” shows up a lot, it might be an E. Once you decide, write E in every square marked 18, and update your key grid.
Codeword puzzles, also known as Codebreakers or Code-Cracking puzzles, have a fascinating history that can be traced back to the early 20th century. Codeword puzzles gained popularity and became a favorite among puzzle enthusiasts due to their unique and challenging nature.
Althought I don't know the exact origin of codeword puzzles, I do happen to know that they share similarities with other word puzzles that involve code-breaking. Using coded letters or numbers to form words or phrases originated from secret codes and ciphers used in espionage and cryptography!
During World War II, code-breaking played a crucial
role in military intelligence, and puzzles inspired by these wartime
experiences surfaced. People found joy and fascination in attempting to
decipher hidden messages and crack codes, leading to codeword puzzles as
a recreational activity. Thankfully, nowadays solving codeword puzzles isn't a matter of life or death.
These puzzles go way back—some say to the 1930s. They first appeared in magazines and puzzle books, and many were inspired by wartime code-breaking techniques used during WWII.
Codeword puzzles gained popularity in the early 20th century, especially in print magazines. The format challenged people to use logic and deduction instead of just vocabulary. Over time, these puzzles became a staple in newspapers and puzzle books around the world.
They offer a unique blend of logic, deduction, and word skills. If you enjoy a good mental workout, you’ll love these. And like all my puzzle books, they’re large print and easy to use.
